What to expect and practicalities #01

What might you expect?

You are invited to talk about yourself, present and past, your future hopes, current difficulties your inner emotional life, your dreams and so on - in whatever way you feel the need to. There are no’ oughts’ or ‘shoulds’ in how to do this. The therapist listens carefully to the way you think and feel about things and together you find ways of exploring what is both said and may be left unsaid. You are invited to expect the unexpected!

This talking therapy can be deceptively demanding and requires commitment and time from both sides of the therapy relationship but the rewards can be substantial. Psychoanalytic psychotherapists undertake a long and rigorous training as befits the nature of this equally rigorous exploration. This rigour might be both appealing and off-putting to you. You may just want to 'dip your toe in' and start slowly. Some people may also have problems requiring more short term work.

Practicalities
  • Initial consultation: this will take one and a quarter hours and costs £70

  • Ongoing therapy: will be in 50 minute sessions once, or twice a week or sometimes more, if more depth is needed. You will have your own session time/s negotiated between us.

  • Fees: are between £50-65 a session for self-financing individuals. I do have a sliding scale, but those sessions at the lower end tend to be full. Fees for couples are by negotiation as are those paid by organisations. An invoice is provided at the end of each month - please note that missed or cancelled sessions are charged for.

  • Referral onwards: for reasons linked to your personal assessment, as well as considerations of gender, age, or location, it may be preferable to refer you to a colleague in the North London Psychotherapy Network. They are all experienced colleagues who are BCP, UKCP, or BACP registered.
